Actually, this is a quick memory: I’m still hearing the PA announcer for the Philadelphia 76ers during their home games in the 1960s.
I’m thinking about that guy after the death this week of Hal Greer.
Those 76ers were loaded — Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, Wali Jones, Chet Walker — but Greer was my favorite on that team, mostly because of the PA announcer. Along with the Boston Celtics, it seemed like those 76ers were always on national television, and while growing up back then in South Bend, Ind., I pulled like crazy for Greer.
